What is bone broth and how to enjoy it more

Bone broth is a drink made by boiling the bones for 12 or more hours. The result of boiling bones is a liquid that is very nutrient-dense and gut-supporting.

Buying bone broth is typically expensive, but it’s easy to make and much less expensive if you have the time to make it.

If you’ve tasted bone broth by itself you know - it’s not tasty.

Especially if you are used to enjoying flavourful foods, like me.

I’m going to give you a few options to make your bone broth a bit more enjoyable so you can experience the benefits with a little more ease. But first I’ll share a few key nutrients you can find in this drink.

What is in bone broth?

Here are some of the key nutrients found in bone broth and some of the ways they contribute to health:

  • Collagen: This is a component of our skin, hair, nails, and joints.

  • Glutamine: Supports the integrity of the digestive tract lining.

  • Glycine: Amongst the wide range of intestinal supporting roles, this amino acid supports the body in regulating inflammation.

  • Generally a great source of protein!

How to make bone broth taste good

  1. Add it to a soup, stew or chili you are making.

  2. Add lemon and salt. Simple, yet effective.

  3. Add a half teaspoon of soy sauce, a spritz of lime, and kimchi juice. You can go all out here and add noodles, maybe a bit of miso paste, and have a quick noodle soup.

  4. Add a little bit of olive juice or pickle juice. Growing up my Mom and Grampa always made soups using a sour brine. It creates a delicious base for soup or adds flavor and boldness to bone broth. Give it a try if you love sour foods.

  5. Boil it with an onion and garlic.

  6. Grate fresh ginger into it and add salt. If you like ginger lemon you can add lemon here too.

  7. Bone broth hot chocolate? I have never tried this one before, but I’m interested.

  8. Bare bones. The more you get used to a flavor, the easier it is. If you’re just looking for the benefits, it’s always an option. I prefer to make it more flavourful myself.

Takeaways

If you’d like to try bone broth, there are lots of ways to add it to your diet, be creative, and don’t expect to love the natural flavor. The more you drink it, the more you get used to it!
